"About Us" from the wedding web site

Elise and me at the Apple store

I figured I should archive the wedding website stuff so I'm putting it into the blog.

About Us

Steve was raised in a family that traveled; from his birth in California to his first memories in Atlanta and to his teen years in the Northeast, his father's engagement in the public transportation business guaranteed a new place every few years. After traveling the world in the U. S. Air Force, he went to college in New York at Alfred University and then returned to his beloved Atlanta. He has found great success as a computer geek, barbecue pit boss, brewer, and socialite. He and his cat, Marley, patrol the eastern edge of Atlanta (keeping the vermin under control). Truth be told, Steve assumes more of a "management" role in this operation.

Elise is director of and member of various choirs (some Grammy-winning) and is the mother of Jilly (best dog ever). A native North Carolinian (attended UNC-Chapel Hill), Elise lived and worked as a high school choral director in Winston-Salem and church musician in High Point. She moved to Atlanta in 2003 to attend Emory University. She enjoyed her eight-second Carnegie Hall solo debut in January 2007, sings in the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra chorus, and works at Emory Presbyterian Church. She is a doctoral candidate at Georgia State University. She hopes Steve will pick up where her formal music education left off..., first bass, then guitar, then maybe some joint song writing...

Steve is 39 and Elise is 33. They love Atlanta and are ecstatic that they finally found each other. They enjoy hanging out, acting foolish, spending time with friends (and the "Jilly"), making and listening to music, reading, and enjoying Atlanta.

We are attempting to personalize and simplify our wedding, focusing on what matters most: sharing it with our family and friends. Sure, there will be a big white dress and tuxedos. But don't expect a thematic color, RSVP cards, fabric-covered chairs or ice sculptures. All RSVPing will be done via website, email, or phone. The getaway vehicle = highly customized. Expect original vows, an awesome Southern buffet, great music, and (of course) love and laughter from that day forward.

How We Met

Internet dating is an astounding thing.

When someone leaves college, most of the traditional methods for finding a mate have fallen by the wayside. No more do they go to town dances, and not all of them attend churches or live in close-knit neigborhoods. In the absence of these traditional methods, we look for others. We try meeting people in bars, while walking our dog in the neighborhood, or by joining a charity or club.

But the Internet, once considered the haven for "weirdos," has begun to assume a prominent spot in the dating landscape. Steve, ever the early adopter, went on his first Internet date in 1996. Over the following ten years, he met quite a few people this way. There were no matches, but he met some people who remain his friends to this day. In the fall of 2006, Elise’s friend Cathy coaxed her into her first foray into Internet dating, the creation of a profile on match.com. While surfing the site some days later, she found Steve’s profile and instantly realized that this guy was different than all the rest! Using the messaging system, she sent him a "wink." Steve saw and responded. But Elise, having not paid for a subscription, could not read the response.

At the same time, Elise's wallet had been stolen and she was in the midst of a "cancel and reissue" nightmare. Continuing to think about Steve, she brought up his profile to show her friends. It showed that he'd responded; her friend Olivia immediately produced a card to allow Elise to subscribe and read the message. They met the next night at the Righteous Room, and they have been together since that moment. Sometimes you just know!
